Make it yours

Free to use and change. No sign-up needed.

How to use it

  1. Type the client and project, copy the outline, and replace each [bracket] with your own words.
  2. Fill in scope and out of scope first. Most disagreements later start there.
  3. Send it for approval as a task or a message, and keep the agreed version with the client record.

Statement of work: [Project name] for [Client name]

1. Overview and goals

  • [What [Project name] is, in two or three sentences]
  • [What [Client name] wants to achieve, in their words]

2. Scope

Out of scope matters as much as in scope. Name the things people tend to assume.

  • In scope: [list what is included]
  • Out of scope: [list what is clearly not included]

3. Deliverables

  • 1[Deliverable one, and who on our side owns it]
  • 2[Deliverable two, and who owns it]
  • 3[Deliverable three, and who owns it]

4. Timeline and milestones

  • [Milestone one: what is finished, by [date]]
  • [Milestone two: what is finished, by [date]]
  • [Launch or final delivery: [date]]

5. What we need from [Client name]

6. Review and approval

  • [How many rounds of changes are included]
  • [How long [Client name] has to respond before the schedule moves]
  • [How approval is recorded, for example in the client space]

7. Fees and payment

  • [Total fee or rate]
  • [Payment schedule: what is invoiced when]
  • [Payment terms, for example due within 14 days]

8. Assumptions and risks

  • [Things we are assuming to be true]
  • [Things that could change the plan, and what happens if they do]

9. Changes to scope

  • [How a change is requested, priced and agreed before work starts]

10. Sign-off

  • [Name, role, signature and date for [Client name]]
  • [Name, role, signature and date for us]

Make it work

Three tips before you send it.

  • Name an owner and a date for every deliverable.
  • Say how many rounds of changes are included. “A few” is not a number.
  • This is a plain outline, not legal advice. Have a professional review your final wording before you rely on it.
